Orikuchi Shinobu made public a lot of his studies of Japanese literature, including folklores, myths and the like in Japan, while he wrote, under the name of Shaku Choku, a large number of tanka, poems, essays and novels. He was at once a first-rate scholar and artist. In this paper, it is argued that these two aspects of Orikuchi are both based on Einbildungskraft (a power of imagination) and should be treated as one. This power of imagination, which was so inseparably connected with Jikkan (intuition), enabled him to create Marebito, the key conception to his intellectual world.
