Separate Tables (1954) by T. Rattigan consists of two one-act plays, Table by the Window and Table Number Seven. Both plays are set in the same seedy but comfortable hotel with almost the same characters. The first play that we discuss here chiefly concerns a fashion model and her stormy relationship with her ex-husband. They hurt each other in their married life, but they still need each other after divorce. The aim of this essay is to examine how effectively they are presented, and also examine the theme and dramatic technique of the play.A comparison is made at times between this play and The Deep Blue Sea.
