中国帰国者3世児童・生徒の生活と教育課題 : 4人の子ども達のエスノグラフィーを通して

According to an investigation made by the Ministry of Edtrcation, in 1997 there were 17,296 foreign children who needed Japancse language assistance in elementary, junior and senior high schools. 30.8% of these are native speakers of Chinese. In 1998. no less than 57 of such children went to schools in Nara Prefecture. In the enrolling schools, the educational strategies aimed at the returnee children are still in the making. Nevertheless, there is a strong tendency among the teachers to consider that thorough language assistance and academic ability support alone are satisfactory. It is beyond argument that support toward Japanese language proficiency and academic ability is very important. However, school education must not neglect to also encourage a positive attitude towards their families and homeland China and to facilitate the formation of an ethnic identity. Therefore, the educational practices related to these returnee children need to be further examined so as to become apt to respond to their life style and situation. Starting with 1998, the author has been engaged in volunteer activity concerning four 3rd generation returnee children from China who now live in Nara for about two years, the author interacted with the subjects and built a mutual trust relationship that occasioned participant observation. The artthor helped them to solve their problems related to school and participatcd together in various cultural events related to Japan, China. or other countries. The present research is also based on data gathered from discussions with their school teachers and their visiting Japanese language teachers. Given the set of circumstances above, this paper sets to describe the world of the 3rd generation returnee children through the means of participant observation. Furthennore, the author aims at making suggestions towards appropriate educational practices directed at returnee children, who are likely to grow in numbers in the future as well.
