The prefixes in- and un- often combine with adjectives in order to expressnegative meaning. The prefix in- derives from a Latin negative prefix. On the otherhand, un- is a native negative prefix. The base of the prefix in- has the feature[+latinate], while the base of the prefix un- has either the feature [+latinate] or[-latinatej. It has been said that the prefix un- is more productive than the prefixin-. Shakespeare also employed the prefix un- in order to make new words. Therefore, many derivatives in un- can be seen in Shakespeare. Some adjectives with the prefix in- have variants with the prefix un-. They arecalled "double forms", and the double forms frequently occur in Shakespeare. In the present paper a comparison of the two negative prefixes in- and un- willshow that one negative prefix differs from the other.
