One of the most difficult problems in teaching speaking skills to Japanese students is providing a low anxiety environment in the classroom. The Islamabad Technique, based upon Counseling-Language Learning, offers an unthreatening learning atmosphere for students. In addition, through the Islamabad Technique, students can receive excellent input tailored to their specific levels and needs for speaking. Furthermore, by adding follow-up activities that reinforce speaking, the Islamabad Technique can be a powerful method to teach speaking skills. This paper first introduces the Islamabad Technique and analyzes the quality of input students can receive using the method. Next, it presents an actual lesson based on the technique and offers possible follow-up activities.
