• Recently,technical colleges in Japan have been equipped with local area networks (LAN). The use of networked computers has great potential in foreign language teaching. Publishing an English language web site on the internet is one of the many ways to utilize computers. This article describes a project done at Nagaoka National College of Technology in which students planned and developed an English home page about environmental issues. It next examines the educational value of conducting such projects with a focus on the learners' motivation and the devellopment of communicative competence. Finally, a positive effect on students' motivation and the development of communicative competence are discussed.
