A recommendable spectorophotometric method has been developed for the determination of traces of gallium and indium by the extraction of the oxine complexes with benzene. Gallium and indium are extracted into benzene as the yellow oxine complexes, which are produced in aqueous medium at pH 5 previously, and then determined spectrophotometrically. The maximum absorptions of the both oxine complexes of gallium and indium in the extract are at approximately 400mμ. Using 1-cm cuvettes, the optimum concentration range for accurate determinations is from 1 to 40μg for gallium and 2 to 70μg for indium per 10ml of the organic solvent respectively. The molar extinction coefficients can be calculated to be 7.18×10^3 in the case of gallium oxine complex and 7.00×10^3 in that of indium oxine complex.
