In this paper, the present progressive and the future progressive forms expressing future time are examined. It is often said that English expresses three kinds of future time with these two grammatical forms. The first is "future arising from present arrangement, plan, or programme" by the present progressive form. (Quirk et al. 1985) The second and third are "temporary situations in the future" and "future as a matter of course" respectively by the future progressive form. (Leech 1987) Traditionally these two uses of the future progressive are regarded as independent of each other. Are the cognitive patterns of situations involved in the three kinds of future expressions different from each other? This paper shows that all these future meanings are derived from a particular cognitive pattern of situations : that is, the basic cognitive pattern of situations denoted by the present progressive form.
