Potassium and sodium ion selectivities of extracellular polysaccharides in red algae were investigated by measuring release of these ions in dialysis experiment, viscosity and potentiometric titration. The release of Na^+ from the solution is faster than that of K^+ in all polysaccharides studied. Among them, κ -carrageenan releases N^+ most easily, corresponding to the K^+ ion selectivity of this polysaccharide found in natural state. The intrinsic viscosity of the potassium salt. Pototentiometri titration curve, however, shows no difference betwee the case of Na^+ and K^+. These results suggest that specificity of K^+ is observed slightly in all cases, but the specificicity found in κ-carragee nan may be ascribed to the arrangement of charged groups along the chain, and hence to the higher order structure of this polysaccharides.
