The removal of iron oxide from clay was investigated by means of low and high intensity magnetic separations with Davis tube, and the following results were obtained. Magnetite was effectively separated from a mixture of fine synthetic magnetite and native pyrophyllite by low intensity magnetic separation in the alkaline pH region of the pulp where the heterocoagulation might be avoided. This preferable pH range was increased by the use of dispersing agent such as sodium oxalate. In high intensity magnetic separation, it was impossible to separate hematite from a mixture of fine synthetic hematite and native pyrophyllite. In the case of native hematite from Brazil, the particles coarser than 400 mesh could be separated by high intensity magnetic separation, but those finer than 400 mesh did not exhibit the same behavior. These descriptions show th t the native hematite mentioned above contains the small amounts of magnetic grains and the latter are liberated by fine grinding. When clay minerals contain free particles of non-magnetic iron oxides, it is possible to separate the latter from the former by low intensity magnetic separation after magnetic roasting.
