The residence time of ore pulp in a number of cells, arranged in series, of the 300 mm×300 mm flotation machines of Fahrenwald type, installed in the Central Research Laboratory of the Nippon Mining Co., Ltd. for testing purpose, has been investigated with ^<24>NaCl as a radioactive tracer. After introducing about 200 of ^<24>NaCl, weighing about 80 mg, into the part of the ore pulp fed continuously to the flotation cells and thus marking the water constituting the pulp, the intensity of activities of ^<24>Na contained in the pulp from the tailing gates of two of the series of the cells was measured with a G-M counter. Then the specific concentration of ^<24>NaCl varying with time was examined. It has been found that the data obtained from the above investigation almost coincide with the values calculated from the following theoretical formula representing generally the concentration of marked flow of any material discharged from the stirred reactors of flow type, such as flotation cells : [numerical formula]where K=F/V ; F=rate of initial flow of a material fed into reactors ; V=effective volume of one reactors ; t=time ; C_0=concentration of the marked material in the firrst reactor at time=0 ; C=concentration of the marked material in the nth reactor at time=t. It has been further revealed that the "flotation time", V/F, hitherto commonly adopted approximately agrees with the average residence time of the ore pulp either obtained in this experiment or obtained by the theoretica1 calculation. In conclusion, it will be possible to simplify greatly the experimental procedures and the technique of measurement and at the same time to attain high accuracy in such experiments, if the radioactive ^<24>NaCl is used as a physical tracer. So it is considered that ^<24>NaCl may be widely utilized as a tracer in investigations of this kind.
