This article is an attempt (1) to investigate Kihaku Saito's ideas of teaching and learning, focusing upon his claim that teaching and learning should be creative, (2) to review H. G. Gadamer's theory of understanding, i. e. his philosophical hermeneutics, and (3) to interpret K. Saito's ideas from the Gadamer's hermeneutical viewpoints. The result suggests that Saito's ideas and Gadamer's theory are rooted on a very similar ground of thoughts.
