Since the beginning of this century, 'scientific approach' has virtually dominated research on teaching in the United States. E. W. Eisner has criticized 'scientific approach' in that the approach neglects quality of experience in teaching. Eisner has suggested 'artistic approach' that tries to provide 'scientific approach' with a complement or 'something more.' Eisner's uniqueness is found in his effort to bring artistic intelligences into scientific field of research on teaching. 'Artistic approach' embodies itself in educational criticism that is based on educational connoisseurship that appreciates quality of teaching. This paper examines significances of criticism in research on teaching based on Eisner's 'educational criticism.'
