Hypothesis tested was that individuals strive for situations that are congruent with their personalities to attain better quality of life (QOL), when they make decisions and communicate their preferences or judgments. The EPQ scale scores indicated that simulated patients, who prefer (or cope well with) physicians' truth-telling about their cancers, are extraverted, stable, toughminded, defensive and characterized by the suppression of emotions, tolerance or better QOL. These personality traits were found to be opposite to those of simulated families (who prefer the truth-telling to the patients) and physicians (who judge the truth-telling as desirable) except stability and toughmindedness or tolerance. Hence families' and physicians' personalities were similar except psychoticism. It was concluded that, contrary to their families or physicians, potential cancer patients, who may prefer full disclosure about their diseases, crave excitement and seek out strong stimulation as might be afforded by receiving adverse information, do not avoid arousing situations involving truth-telling, can tolerate more (less vulnerable to) such situations, conform well to physicians' judgments, and can cope well with threat of truth-telling by suppressing it, to keep it a tolerable level, hence complain least about distress, leading to enhanced QOL.
