This paper is based on a semantic analysis of the word yu in the titles of Guoyu, etc. This is a word with multiple meanings, and its earliest use in titles is found with several classical writings including Guoyu, Lunyu, and other texts now lost. What is the original meaning of this word, and what historical changes are involved in its usage ? Following are the implications and findings concerning these questions: 1) The word yu means dialogue in Guoyu. 2) In Lunyu it is used in the same sense, but collocutors of the dialogue are kept in the dark. In Xinyu written by Lujia, however, no such meaning is to be found. 3) Is there any relationship between yu and such works as Laozi, Mengzi, and Sunzi entitled with personal names? 4) An analysis of dialogue passages in Lunyu. This analysis enables us to glimpse at some features characterizing each volume of the book. 5) A study of recurrent sentences in Lunyu. Lunyu contains a number of stereotyped sentences in various places, which it has been customary to neglect as having only marginal interest. In this paper a tentative study is made to clarify the underlying causes of this phenomenon, and several interesting results are obtained.
