Guoyu (国語) which is usually regarded as a sister volume to Zuozhuan (左伝) consists of Zhouyu (周語 three volumes), Luyu (魯語 two volumes), Qiyu (斉語 one volume), Jinyu (晋語 nine volumes), Zhengyu (〓語 one volume), Chuyu (楚語 two volumes), Wuyu (呉語 one volume) and Yueyu (越語 two volumes). Following are the problems dealt with in this paper concerning the structural framework of Guoyu : 1. Why is it that such important states as Qin (奏), Sung (宋) and Wei (衛) that thrived in the time of Chunqiu are left unmentioned ? 2. Why do these eight states appear just in that order ? 3. What is the reason that the West Zhou Dynasty is mentioned only in Zhouyu and Zhengyu ? 4. Zheng (〓) that appears in Zhengyu is a small state neighbouring West Zhou and constitutes a sort of direct feudatory to its emperor. Why then does it not appear in Zhouyu, and why its history at the time of Lu is left unnoticed ? 5. What is the reason that Qiyu, Wuyu and Yueyu remain biographies of such persons as Huangong (桓公), Fucha (夫差) and Koujian (勾践), while Zhouyu, Luyu, Jinyu and Chuyu are historical descriptions ? 6. Why does Zhouyu begin with the reign of King Mu (穆王) ? I have studied the semantic features of the word yu in Guoyu elsewhere(February, 1968), and this paper is intended as its sequel focused on the meaning of guo.
