Many computational techniques such as finite difference method, finite element method, transfer matrix method, method of series expansion, etc. have been used for the stress analysis of plates, folded plates and shells. In these methods, the finite element method is most widely used. Hower, there are some disadvantages in spite of its usefulness. One of them is that the large linear system of equation have to be solved if dividing the structure into a large number of meshes. On the other hand, a transfer matrix method has been also applied to many structural engineering problems. One of the advantage of this method is that the algebraic computations are simpler and there is also a substantial decrease of unknowns in the simultaneous linear system of equations. In this paper, the authors presented the computational technique combined the advantages of the finite element method and the transfer matrix method. Algebraic point of view, the solving procedure of the linear system of equations is expressed by the combination of the Gauss elimination process and the reduction of the transfer matrix method. The presented technique is applied to the bending problems of plates and it obtained better numerical results that the ordinary finite element method.
