The proliferation of research and development in the field of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) has led some educators to explore the notion that new technologies are changing language, learning, and the learner. Ironically, this comes at a time when CALL developers face a critical impediment, the lack of a theoretical framework to guide their work. This paper suggests that the quest for theoretical directions is hampered by a reliance on the "classroom" as a metaphor in the creation of software. It argues that reliance upon the principles of autonomous language learning can not only respond to the theoretical lacuna but lead to the discovery of other metaphors more congruent with the potential of this powerful learning tool.
