This paper offers a neurobiological rationale for the development of foreign language programmes based on the principles of learner autonomy. In his most recent area of inquiry, Schumann has explored the relationship of affect and cognition in language learning at the neural level. The author of this paper examines several of the pedagogical principles of learner autonomy through the lens of Schumann's argument. In doing so, the author attempts to shed some light on two questions : 1) What might characterize a classroom approach based on learner autonomy; and 2) why should foreign language teachers be interested in adopting such an approach?
