This paper focuses on 1) English rhythm and stress and 2) error correction with respect to such elements for Japanese learners of English. Acoustical measurements were carried out on intensity and interval time of English and Japanese speakers' utterances. English rhythm, which is assumed to be stress-timed, is different from the Japanese mora-timed rhythm. In one experiment, the strength of the stresses in speakers' utterances was measured in decibels (dB). In addition, interstress intervals (ISI) were measured in milliseconds. The results showed that although Japanese subjects were conscious of the English stresses, they did not show a clear peak in strength, but more in loudness and pitch of the voice. In production, they tended to become weak in loudness toward the end of each sentence, and pronounce every syllable with nearly the same intensity. It has been said that English stress is isochronic, fowever, that English is strictly isochronous can be disproven by ISI and foot measurements. The rhythm that is felt in the native speaker's brain has a psychological or mental reality, which is difficult to capture by instrumental measurements. In teaching rhythm and stress, we must pay attention to fine points such as the fact that stressed syllables (=vowels) should be pronounced longer than weak syllables. In addition to strong syllables, we should provide much practice in sound changes such as elision, linking, assimilation and weaking of unstressed syllables.
