This paper is one of a series which deals with teaching English pronunciation especially for Japanese learners. In the first paper (Arimoto: 1991), I discussed general strategies for pronunciation teaching, then the series of tactics will continue with specific emphasis on consonants, vowels, rhythm, intonation, stress, and so on. The present paper focuses on error correction with respect to consonants. Typical errors in each consonant that Japanese learners of English tend to make are suggested and their causes are examined based on analysis by spectrograph. These errors are due to one or more of the following items; 1) weakness of egressive pulmonic airstream which causes weak plosives and a lack of friction, 2) substitution of approximate Japanese sounds, 3) adding an extra vowel to the consonant of the end of a word or syllable due to interference of the Japanese syllable system, 4) a lack of proper instruction and correction made students acquire mispronunciations that are rather difficult to correct. Then I propose their practical methods of correction. The teaching technique described in this article is useful for teachers who give instructions to the Japanese learners of English, if the teachers have basic knowledge and skills both in English and Japanese phonetics.
