Culture means the total system of values beliefs customs, religions, and manners. Although cultural differences exist everywhere to a certain extent, they are more extreme between people from greatly differing countries. The number of Japanese working abroad is increasing, as is the number of people from other countries who now visit or live in Japan. We tend to view all other people by using our own particular culture as a guide, an attitude that is described as ethnocentrism. Stereotyping is a frequent communication error as we consider people from other countries.People from some other cultures, particularly Latin America and the Middle East, are much more casual about the exact use of time than are persons in the United States. Cultures also differ in their use of personal space and in various other methods of nonverbal communication.Business letters written in America tend to bshould attempt to learn the language and to find out as much about the country as possible. Before overseas assignment or study abroad, you should attempt to learn the language and to find out as much about the country as possible. As many as 144 projects designed to promote international or intercultural communication were effected out last year in Akita Prefecture. All the reports and feedback for the projects should be made public in both Japanese and English to promote the inserest of local Japanese and foreign people in intercultural communication, which will in turn lead to more mutual understanding.
