• Over the last quarter of this century teaching English has been more than before centered on the communicative role of a language in Japan, but it has never been so successful despite the large number of scholarly articles and textbooks devoted to the aim and so much assistance from English native speakers. This article investigates whether or not there may be, apart from the language barrier, any cause unique to native speakers of Japanese.
