The central monoaminergic and sympathetic nervous systems are thought to be involved in the onset and persistence of hypertension. The author examined the monoamine levels in various regions of the brain, heart and adrenal glands in the stroke prone spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHRSP) and the normotensive Wister Kyoto Rat (WKY) at the ages of 1.5,3 and 6 month. The noradrenaline content in the brain stem increased in WKY, but decreased in SHRSP with age. The noradrenaline content in 1.5 month-old SHRSP was larger than those in the age-matched-WKY. The serotonin content in the brain stem was larger in SHRSP at the age of 1.5 and 6 months than in the age-matched WKY. The noradrenaline and serotonin contents in the hypothalamus, thalamus, septum, basal ganglia and fore and temporal cortex in 1.5-, 3- and 6-month-old SHRSP were not marked different from those in the age-matched WKY. The noradrenaline contents in left and right ventricles were larger in 3-month-old SHRSP than in the age-matched WKY, but those were smaller in 6-month-old SHRSP than in the aged-matched WKY. The noradrenaline and adrenaline contents increased with age in both the SHRSP and WKY, the increase being greater in the SHRSP. These Findings suggest that the noradrenaline and serotonin contents in brain stem are related to the onset of hypertension and the change of monoamine levels in other parts of the brain, heart and adrenal gland are related to the persistence of hypertension.
