Immunosuppressive Acidic Protein (IAP) in which authors have a clinical interest has been known to be one of the important immunosuppressive substances existing in sera of patients with carcinoma. We have already reported that serum IAP levels are clinically recognized as severity of carcinoma and are considered to be one of the prognostic factors of malignant or benign disease for the patients with ovarial carcinoma. For the patients with ovarial carcinoma who responded to chemotherapy, serum IAP levels decreased gradually and reached within the normal range at the completion of the therapy. While, for most of the patients who hardly responded to chemotherapy, IAP levels remained high. Thus, a fall in IAP levels may indicate a response to chemotherapy. Among 23 patients with cervical carcinoma who received radiotherapy alone, about a half of them (12 cases) showed positive IAP levels (>500 μg/ml) until the 3rd month of the completion of the therapy. All the patients, who still showed positive IAP levelseven in the 6th month, developed recurrent lesions later. In the follow-up of patients who completed mono-radiotherapy six months before, still positive IAP levels suggest a recurrence of the disease. Strict follow-up observation is required on this regard. Metastasis into bones or lymph nodes (recurrence) are hard to be early diagnosed by the conventional method. IAP measurement is also useful in the diagnosis of these metastasis.
