Lawrence criticizes in his works again and again the modern civilization, for, he thinks, it prevents us from leading a life worthy of man. It is rationalism that makes the essence of the modern civiliaztion. According to him, the rationalism distorts two kinds of ralationships man makes with his surroundings. One is the human relationship between man and woman, man and man, woman and woman, parents and children. Among them, Lawrence says, the man-woman relationship is the most important and essential to human life. The other is the one between man and nature or cosmos. And it is the effects of the rationalism upon these two relationships that he treats earnestly in Women in Love, a novel which shows most clearly his attitude towards the modern civilization. This paper is designed to study Lawrence's view of the modern civiliaztion, by discussing the effects of the rationalism upon these two relationships as shown in Women in Love, referring to his other works as well.
