The purpose of this study is to clarify the steric hindrance effect of methoxycarbonyl (-COOCH_3) in the fatty acid methyl ester on mixed monolayer states. Three kinds of long normal chain fatty acids methyl esters were selected : palmitic acid methyl ester, stearic acid methyl ester, and arachidic acid methyl ester. The surface pressures of myristic acid / palmitic acid methyl ester, myristic acid / stearic acid methyl ester, and myristic acid / arachidic acid methyl ester were measured at various compositions and temperatures. Mean molecular area-mole fraction curves, two-dimensional phase diagrams and apparent molar energy changes were evaluated. Taking advantage of the results of our previous studies on the fatty acid / fatty acid systems, the interaction between myristic acid and fatty acid methyl esters in mixed monolayers was elucidated. It was found that the degree of the steric hindrance effect of methoxycarbonyl (-COOCH_3) in the mixed monolayers is analogous to the decrease in the condensation effect of fatty acid which contains one fewer carbon atom in a molecule than the corresponding ester.
