In order to clarify the effect of double bond in the hydrocarbon chain on the mixed monolayer states, DL-12-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid (12HOA) and five kinds of unsaturated fatty acids were selected : trans-9-octadecenoic acid (trans 9), trans-12-octadecenoic acid (trans 12), trans-15-octadecenoic acid (trans 15), cis-12-octadecenoic acid (cis 12), cis-15-octadecenoic acid (cis 15). The surface pressures of 12HOA / trans 9,12HOA / trans 12,12HOA / trans 15,12HOA /cis 12 and 12HOA /cis 15 systems were measured at various compositions and temperatures. Mean molecular area-mole fraction curves, two-dimensional phase diagrams and apparent molar energy changes were evaluated. The results of our studies are described as follows : (1) the 12HOA / unsaturated fatty acids systems showed eutectic transformations in mixed monolayers; (2) the order of the steric hindrance effect of double bond on the mixed monolayer of 12HOA / unsaturated fatty acids systems is cis 12 > trans 9 > cis 15 > trans 12 > trans 15.
