In this paper, I intended to find an answer to the question of whether or not the scores in a discrete point test of multiple-choice type can be an efficient indicator of English proficiency of its test takers. Firstly, some examples are presented of a suspected mismatch between test scores and examinees' English abilities. Secondly, the limitations inherent in the measurement of language ability are investigated by reviewing some literatures on testing. Then, the results in a multiple-choice discrete point test is analysed in an attempt to clarify the difficulty of interpreting the test scores into examinees' general proficiency in English. Lastly, the suspected method effect in discrete point test is summarised based on the analysis.
