This article focuses on Tanaka Ippei, a member of the first graduating class of Takushoku University (Taiwan kyoai gakko), and a pioneer of Japan's Islamic studies, who was not only the second Japanese to accomplish a pilgrimage to Mecca but also made two pilgrimages to that holy place. After the Second World War Tanaka has been almost completely consigned to oblivion. This is of course in large measure related to the one-sided view of history imposed by the Tokyo Tribunal. In particular, there has been a tendency to reject all Islamic studies relating to the raising of Asia, because Japan's pre-1945 Islamic studies and approaches to the Islamic world were closely linked to her war effort and administration of the occupied territories. However, Japan's prewar Islamic studies and contacts with the Islamic world included important ideals of racial equality, Asian liberation, and the raising of Asia. In terms of ideas, these studies represented a valuable attempt to form a non-Western value system that opposed the evils of the modern world order built upon modern Western values with their materialism, neglect of moral issues, and social injustices. This article, by removing the Western biases with their hostility toward Islam, attempts to present the true picture of Tanaka Ippei from a Japanese perspective. At the same time, it also attempts to make clear the nature of the ideas of the raising of Asia and reassess the role of Tanaka Ippei as the embodiment of Takushoku University spirit. While this article attempts to make clear the universal significance of Tanaka's thought, further study is necessary before a definitive assessment of Tanaka's thought and behavior can be properly made. This article is but a first step in this direction.
