The aim of this article is to introduce students to some studies in socio-economic transformation in Vietnamese history at an undergraduate level. Through the typical events from the early twentieth century to the present, from Karl Marx's concepts of "mode of production" and "socio-economic formation", this article examines the socio-economic transformation in Vietnam during the twentieth century. The author would like here to analyze some historical processes and characteristics of the socio-economic transformation. As a result of the combination of internal and external features, the socio-economic structure of Vietnam has changed in many complicated directions. The French colonialization, the thirty-year long war, integration into world capitalism and socialism deeply influenced the changes in the economy and society, most of which led to some developments towards modernization and catastrophes. From its past experiences, present-day Vietnam is following the path of the socialist-oriented market economy to development. These analyses can led us to an understanding of what the historical legacy poses for development of present-day Vietnam. Anyone who studies the history of Vietnam, which is filled with changes and challenges, recognizes this reality.
