The objective of this article is to introduce students to some studies on culture and civilization of Viet Nam at an undergraduate level. From some viewpoints grounded in Arnold J. Toynbee, Fernand Braudel and Samuel P. Huntington's concepts of culture and civilization, this article examines the first era of civilization in Vietnamese history. It provides analysis of the long development of prehistoric archaeological culture, leading to the Van Lang-Au Lac civilization, with some details of the main characteristics of this civilization, and how its position and values impacted strongly in the whole history of Viet Nam. As a result of the large cultural exchange and acculturation, the Van Lang-Au Lac civilization, based on the Dong Son archaeological culture, the wet rice agriculture, and the rural communes belonging to the Asiatic mode of production became the era of the first nation and state formation in the territory of present-day northern Viet Nam. It provided the first foundation for Vietnamese identity, traditions and way of life, which created the context for the emergence of Vietnamese from a diverse linguistic background.
