"The new Enlightenment" in China, which began in the late 1980s, has intensified as the nation enters the Information Age. This review essay is a survey of the role of the Internet in this movement. In the first section, the historical background of the movement, its conceptualization and major concerns are introduced. In the second section, the seven volume series The Internet Culture, regarded by many as representing the heights the movement has reached thus far, is examined. The intent is to present a general picture of the main players of the movement, Chinese intellectuals, as they approach the information age.
