Reflective practice is an exciting concept. The concepts of reflective practice have been embraced within nursing schools in western countries. However, reflective practice has not been integrated into the Japanese nursing curricula. It was considered that different cultural and educational values and perceptions, which impact on Japanese nursing practice and education are the potential reasons why reflective practice has not been embraced into nursing curriculum in Japan. Therefore, the focus of this study was to clarify the reason why reflective practice has been emphasized in nursing curricula in western countries with highlighting the current standard of reflective practice within western nursing education. It was then to identify the possible reasons why reflective practice is absent from Japanese curriculum through examination of Japanese cultural values and current Japanese nursing educational approaches.
