In the past decade, many Japanese colleges and universities have instituted computer language labs to assist students with English language learning Although computer assisted language learning (CALL) cannot yet be considered a methodological approach, vast sums of money have been invested in an attempt to enhance traditional language learning approaches through the use of modern language learning software. However, to date not a single evaluation has been done in Japan of the effectiveness of computer language labs on language learning. This paper attempts to partially fill this research gap by analyzing the way in which two computer language labs in two different settings have been utilized by students and instructors. Data was collected through on-site observations, informal interviews and surveys. The results of the data suggest that far from serving a central language learning function, the computer labs were utilized primarily as quasi-game centers and word processing instructional facilities.
