American Higher Education is one of the world' s largest and most highly regarded educational systems. It educates more than 13 million students in over 3,500 schools. Although it is possible to speak of American Higher Education in general terms, it is actually comprised of four main types of schools, each with somewhat different goals and historical development. There are public and private four year universities and colleges, two year private colleges and two-year public community colleges. This paper will look at some of the issues and questions that arise when one looks at the historical development of these four types of schools.
