Although many EFL(English as a Foreign Language) pronunciation classes purport that they are helping students improve their oral intelligibility, often what this means is that they are helping students learn how to produce English sounds. This is necessary, but for students to improve their oral intelligibility, they also need to be taught how to pronounce words. This paper examines the role spelling plays in expanding EFL classroom pronunciation goals along the lines of word-level stress improvement. This is demonstrated by applying Dickerson's (1978 : 12,1981 : 73,1989 : Unit 3,25) pedagogical translation of Chomsky and Halle's Romance Stress Rule (1968 : 240) to the word-final us English word corpus.
