This article examines cases of corpora of lexical entries found in the Beijing Foreign Languages Institute (BLFI) Chinese-English Dictionary that exemplify the effects of the ideological struggle within the functioning of language policy in the People's Republic of China (PRC). It begins with a presentation of general observations of how English, with its global status as an accepted lingua franca, uniquely serves a variety of societal needs in different national settings. It then looks at the hegemonic language policy of China and how English has been used as a tool to propagate the ideology of a unified multinational Chinese state in an anti-elitist Communistic form. In particular this is done by utilizing a modification of a Ponsonbian analysis of World War I British war propaganda strategies in looking at the C-corpus lexical English entries in the popular BLFI Chinese-English Dictionary.
