In the last decade, interdisciplinary scholarship, using hermeneutics and phenomenological methodologies, has generated controversial opinions and perceptions, as well as new language with which to speculate about the intellectual and spiritual capacities of the artists who created the European cave imagery dating from the Upper Paleolithic. Briefly, the character and possible motives for this earliest yet surviving art are surveyed and questioned relative to some established interdisciplinary literature.
