Leakage flux of a linear induction motor (LIM) occurs mainly in the slot of the primary core and decreases the thrust of LIM. This paper proposes a new configuration of primary core for LIM, i.e., a rectangular core LIM to decrease the slot leakage flux. Teeth and yoke made by oriented cores are arranged at right angles for orientating the magnetic flux in the primary core. As a result of new configuration, we reduce the slot leakage flux and increase the gap flux for the thrust. Experimental results show that the starting thrust of rectangular core LIM made by oriented cores increases a maximum of 19 [%] as compared with the usual primary core made by non-oriented cores.
