In this paper, the sinusoidal PWM input currents in a new GTO converter are considered. In an AC-to-DC converter using GTO thyristors, undesired commutating energy is inevitably generated in the AC source leakage reactance. A method must therefore be introduced to handle this energy. In our method the energy is handled with a specially designed auxiliary circuit developed and added to the main power circuit. The circuit operation of this power circuit is first examined. Then a principle, used to control the 3-phase AC line input currents of the GTO converter in sinusoidal pulse-width modulated (PWM) patterns, is discussed in detail. The pattern of DC output voltage obtained is also discussed. The harmonic content of the sinusoidal PWM current in the AC line is calculated and plotted in various distribution curves over a wide control range of current pulse-width adjustment (modulation factor). The content is investigated in two cases : with and without the discharge current from an auxiliary capacitor in the energyhandling circuit.
