A torsional braid analysis (TBA) has often been adopted to study properties of polymer solutions by several investigators. In this paper, this method of TBA is tried to apply to examine the transition phenomena of lubricating greases. Lithium soap grease based on mineral oil and two kinds of lithium soap greases based on different silicone oils were used for the samples. Viscoelastic properties of these samples were measured in the wide temperature range (-120℃∿+100℃) in consequence of improvement of the apparatus of TBA and examining of the measuring condition for the grease sample. From the result, temperature dependence curves of logarithmic decrements and those of relative rigidities of the greases were obtained. And the temperature at the peak of logarithmic decrement curve was measured as the transition point. This transition point is equivalent to a melting point in consideration of the behavior of relative rigidity. These equivalent melting point obtained were -50℃ for the grease based on mineral oil, -110℃ and -63℃ for those based on silicone oils. It is recognized that the experimental results show that TBA is a useful method for examining the transition phenomena of lubricating greases.
