This study is about penetration characteristics of the screw point of the Swedish weight sounding test which is widely used for researches of the surface ground. The experiments have been conducted to clarify the following 3 points. The first point is about the penetration characteristics of the screw, the second about the reliability of the results of the Swedish weight sounding test for layer boundaries and the third about relations between the shape of the screw and the penetration mechanism. Tests for the first and second points were conducted against a model ground of the soil cement produced indoor, and a test for the third point was conducted at a sand-soil layer and an original location (loamy layer). The following facts were found out from this study. (1) The soil carried out by the penetration of the screw has nothing to do with rod friction. (2) The N_<sw> cannot be a correct value unless the value is measured with at least a whole length of the screw point being penetrated into the ground. (3) The screw point for which the number of time of rotation is specified as once under the current provisions has superior penetration capabilities than those screw points of the 0.5 time and two times rotations in the loamy layer.
