Structural study was carried out for V_2O_5-Bi_2O_3-TeO_2 glasses by infrared absorption spectroscopy. The glass composition range was V_2O_5=20-69mol%, Bi_2O_3=6-25mol% and TeO_2=6-74mol%. IR peaks due to V=O (1010cm^<-1>), V-O_2 (900cm^<-1>) and V-O_3 (650cm^<-1>) were observed, and with increase in V_2O_5 content these absorptions became larger. From these results, the glass structure was interpreted to become dominantly a layered structure of VO_5 for larger V_2O_5 contents. The absorption at 860cm^<-1> attributed to BiO_6 octahedra for all the Bi_2O_3 contents. When TeO_2 content decreased, the peak at 700cm^<-1> was observed, being attributable to trigonal-pyramidal TeO_3,while the peaks appeared at 635cm^<-1>, 650cm^<-1>, and 600cm^<-1> with increase in TeO_2 content were ascribed to tetragonal-pyramidal TeO_4. It is considered that the glasses with stated composition have a structure in which the structural units of layered VO_5,BiO_6 octahedra, and trigonal-pyramidal TeO_3 and/or tetragonal-pyramidal TeO_4 were incorporated independently.
