Electrical Conductivity of V_2O_5-CaO-Bi_2O_3 Glasses

V_2O_5-CaO-Bi_2O_3 glasses were prepared by pressquenching method of glass melts, together with that of glass were heat-treated. The glass formation region was found to be 60<V_2O_5<100 mol%, 0<CaO<40 mol% and 0<Bi_2O_3<20 mol%. The oxygen molar volume for the glasses increased with decrease in V_2O_5 content, but, the glass transition temperature, T_g, not always decreased. The electrical conductivitiy (σ) of the glasses at 300K ranged from σ=3.9×10^<-7> to 1.0×10^<-6> [S・cm^<-1>], and the activation energy (W) for conduction varied from W=0.33∿0.47 eV. The glasses were n-type semiconducting and the conduction was attributed to small polaron hopping. Crystallization of the glasses by post heat-treatment increased their conductivity 10^4 fold. Main crystalline products from pure glasses were identified to be CaV_2O_5,BiVO_4. However, V_2O_5 and Ca_<0.17>V_2O_5 were identified from the another case, glass which contain glass and crystals.
