<RESEARCH REPORT>A CURVILINEAR COORDINATE METHOD FOR THE SOLUTIONS OF INITIAL VALUE PROBLEMS USING THE THIRD-ORDER UPWIND DIFFERENCING SCHEME

Recently, highly accurate and stable numerical solutions for time-dependent convection-dominated fluid flows are urgently required. A calculation procedure to solve highly unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in arbitrary shapes is presented. The boundary-fitted curvilinear coordinate system is used to generate a coordinate surface coincident with the boundary contours in the physical plane. A second-order forward difference approximation is used for the time derivative and a third-order upwind differencing method for the convective terms which suppress the instabilities is used. The third-order method for the space derivatives is based on the Quadratic Upstream Interpolation for Convective Kinematics (QUICK) algorithm. The solutions for a time-marching square cavity flow and a channel flow with a bump at the Reynolds number of 10^4 are obtained.
