Preliminary investigations have been made into the use of SIS (superconductor-insulator-superconductor) diodes for possible roles in submillimeter imaging systems. These diodes are particularly well suited for incorporating into systems involving printed antenna arrays on quartz substrates. In a novel approach using semiconductor devices at high frequencies, a GaAs FET was used as a mm and submillimeter detector and mixer. Since the FET is a three-terminal device, it also has interesting possibilities as a L. O.
