Various properties and behaviors of a plasma in a slow theta-pinch (BSG I') are measured and investigated in detail. Basic parameters such as the temperature and density are measured in a wide pressure range by laser scattering and interferometry. The characteristics of the temperature and the compression time are compared with a snow plow model, and they are in good consistency. The instability appears at the pressure higher than 50 mtorr but is suppressed at the pressure higher than 350 mtorr. Some discussions about the stabilization effects are described. The end loss is also measured and the e-folding time is more than 20μs. To produce a plasma of low density, z-discharge preionization is applied, and the slow theta-pinch is operated in the first half cycle. A new method is applied to initiate the z-discharge even at very low pressure. This allows us to investigate a collisionless plasma in a theta-pinch, in which some anomalies on the contraction and heating are observed.
