In this study, we used transvaginal ultrasonography to examine variations in endometrial thickness and maximum follicular diameter from the early follicular phase to the late luteal phase during spontaneous and clomiphene citrate cycles. We also predicted ovulation by evaluating the growth pattern of endometrial thickness and maximum follicular diameter during spontaneous and clomiphene citrate cycles. In both groups, the last day of the low phase on a basal body temperature chart was defined as day 0. Endometrial thickness increased linearly 9 days before ovulation by 0.54 mm/day and 0.63 mm/day during spontaneous and clomiphene citrate cycles, respectively. Maximal follicular diameter increased linearly 7 days before ovulation by 1.8 mm/day in women with spontaneous cycles, and 9 days before ovulation by 1.7 mm/day in clomiphene citrate-treated women. Thus, we conclude that transvaginal sonographic measurement of endometrial thickness and maximal follicular diameter may be a useful clinical method of predicting ovulation.
