Seventy six individuals who were over 60 years old and lived alone, were surveyed in Hawaii (U.S.A.) and Osaka (Japan) to predict an effective pattern of social adjustment among the aged in the Japanese society which has been changing toward an individualistic society. The well-adjusted individuals among the Hawaii respondents who lived already in an individualistic society showed a tendency to put a significant value on the interaction with old friends, while those of the Osaka respondents tended to neglect the interaction with friends and put a great value on the family interaction. Three items in a personality test "lively", "active" and "out-going", responded particularly among the well-adjusted respondents in Hawaii. On the other hand, "optimistic" was particularly responded in Osaka by the well-adjusted. It has been suggested that the elderly in Japan will need to more value their interaction with old friends in the future rather than the family interaction. It has been also suggested that a sense of confusion on the appropriate way of social adjustment will spread among the aged in the process of social change in Japan.
